Armada tells the story of Zack Lightman and his
struggle to save the planet and his family. Classic, right? Lightman is a
likable enough guy with a understandable chip on his shoulder courtesy to the
untimely death of his father as a young man during an industrial accident, while
Zack is just a baby. He grows up with a really cool mom and an undying passion
for video games like his late father, and more specifically for Armada, one of the
video games everyone has been playing for years.
When the excrement really
starts flying, Lightman along with many of the other top ranked Armada players
is inducted into the Earth Defense Alliance, that in a very Enders Game style,
has been training him and millions of others via the video game Armada he’s
been playing for years.
Armada has the popular geek culture references one would expect
from the author of Ready Player One, as well as many other
references that could potentially go right over the heads of younger readers.
Armada also has several loyal sidekicks and a perspective girlfriend for Zack
who isn’t one to be underestimated. Arguably she is a better and more kick as
fighter than Zack who can’t seem to follow orders, although that insubordination
ultimately ends up saving the world.
All in all Armada is an amazing book worthy of picking up
regardless of your normal genre preferences, like many other fans of his novels
I remain hopeful that we will see these characters again, but if not then at
least we were given books that, we will never tire of rereading and will bring
us joy for years to come.
